Liaison Psychiatry for Older People

The Team

The liaison psychiatry service for older people is provided for:

older people (aged 65 years and over) who have a physical illness and co-existent psychiatric disorder (predominantly depression, delirium or dementia).
older people with physical symptoms that have a psychological origin.
older people with physical illness and associated psychological or emotional problems.

We aim to:

provide responsive and comprehensive mental health assessment of older people at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital.
work collaboratively with health care professionals in the general hospital setting to meet the mental health needs of older people and promote patient centred care.
provide advice, education and support on mental health issues to healthcare professionals, older people and their carers whilst in general hospital.
provide the highest quality of service possible for the population within available resources.
maintain and develop close links with Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust community mental health teams for older people.
use the care programme approach to ensure continuation of care for service users and their families.
communicate effectively with all agencies involved in the older person's care, including the primary care team.
use evidence-based practice (in other words, treatment that has been proved to work effectively) to provide high quality care.
implement and comply with the Mental Health Act 1983.
act within the Mental Capacity Act 2005: every adult has the right to make his or her own decisions and must be assumed to have capacity to do so unless it is proved otherwise.
maintain links with universities and training establishments to develop the skills of staff and contribute to research initiatives.
