Children's Community Physiotherapy Service
The Team
We are a team of physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants who specialise in treating children. We aim to improve the quality of life of children and young people by promoting independence and encouraging physical fitness and wellbeing.
Where do we work?
Assessments and interventions may take place at a variety of settings depending on what is most suitable for your child. This can include:
- Home
- Nursery for pre-school children
- Mainstream schools
- Special schools
- Clinical settings
What do we do?
We work in close partnership with the family and professionals involved in a child care. These professionals may include staff from; the educational sector, social work, and the voluntary sector.
During the assessment the team may look at:
- Muscle strength
- Co-ordination
- Motor development
- Ranges of movement
- Posture and balance
- Quality of movements
- Function
We provide:
- Formal assessments
- Observational assessments
- Advice to parents, carers, and other relevant professionals
- Referrals to other services as required
- Physical management programmes for use at home, nursery, and schools.
- Training for physical management programmes in all appropriate settings to enable these to be carried out effectively
- Assessment for specialist equipment
- Assessment for orthotic needs
The decision whether to offer further support from physiotherapy will be based on multiple factors from the assessment process. This will vary for each individual child and may change as a child progresses and develops.
Who do we work with?
We work alongside a range of healthcare professionals such as:
- Paediatricians
- Consultants
- Orthopaedics
- GP
- Health visitors
- Nurses
- Occupational Therapy
- Speech and Language Therapy
- Other physiotherapy teams
Your child will be seen by the acute physiotherapy service following surgery or other orthopaedic intervention for a block of intensive rehabilitation as clinically indicated. During this time your physiotherapy care will be transferred to the acute team and then handed back over to the community team when appropriate.
How parents and carers can help
You can help us by:
- Keeping us up to date with your current contact details
- Letting us know when your child is unable to make an appointment or will not be in school when a physiotherapy school appointment is arranged
- Letting us know of any changes to your child’s health or of any new concerns you may have.
How to access the service
If you are concerned about your child and feel they may need a referral to physiotherapy then please seek advice from your GP or an appropriate health professional who may be involved with your child’s care.
Referrals are accepted from:
- Consultants
- Paediatricians
- GPs
- Physiotherapists
- Occupational Therapists
- Those Children registered with a Hull GP can have a referral sent in by any registered healthcare professional
