Welcome to the Hull and East Riding Children’s Neurodiversity Service. This service is a true partnership where children’s services work together with the child/young person and their family to understand what support is needed and how to help.

We would like to let you know that we are currently receiving an increased number of referrals and have a back log on sending out letters which advise of the referral outcome. We are working on alternative ways of sharing this information with you. If you are expecting a letter and have not received one, please contact us either by telephone: 01482 692929 Option 2 or Email: hnf-tr.hullandeastridingneurodiversityservice@nhs.net.

Moving forward we would like to communicate with you via email / text message. If we do not already have your consent, please email hnf-tr.humberneuroadmin@nhs.net adding the word “Consent” to the subject line and providing your preferred form of communication.

Please also include the name and date of birth of the young person with a referral into the service, along with your email address and current mobile telephone number.

The Service

The Children’s Neurodiversity service includes the following services:

The Front Door Offer

Following a period of review, it was decided in conjunction with stakeholders the NFD would move forward functioning as a Single Point of Contact for ASD / ADHD diagnostic assessments.

The Front Door is not accepting Requests for Support.

The Front Door Team works at the triage stage of referral to ensure the child or young person is supported to access the right pathway and support.

Following engagement with our stakeholders, partner provider services, and an ongoing evaluation of the service, the Children’s Neurodiversity Service, Front Door Team are now accepting referrals via the listed Professionals in a phased way.

The Front Door Team

The Front Door Team includes an Operational Manager, Clinical Lead, Advanced Practitioners who are specialists in neurodiversity, Assistant Practitioners and Administrators.

Who can refer?

Referrals for ASD and/or ADHD assessments will only be accepted from the following professionals:

SENCOs
Educational Psychologists
Paediatricians
Speech and Language Therapists
Portage
Health Visitors
Core CAMHS
Providers Neurodiversity Services including the Sensory Service

How to make a referral

To make a referral the above professionals; parents/carers, education or second setting information (should the young person be out of education) are to complete specific referral forms and screening checklists.

As part of our ongoing Transformation, we are reviewing the referral forms, therefore, to ensure you have the current version, we recommend Professionals contact the Front Door Team to request ASD and / or ADHD packs.

All areas need to be fully completed on current documentation with contextual information added in the boxes provided.

Supporting information is to be provided if available from any other services involved with the Child / Young Person to gain an all-round representation of need.

Digital Referral Form

We are currently working on a digital referral form for Autism and ADHD referrals.

There were 2 stakeholder events held on 21^st June which involved, Parents, Carers, SENCOs and other professionals to go through the new referral form to ensure that it was capturing the correct information and also easier to fill in

From these events it was clear that a number changes were needed and also training would be needed, this would take a large amount of time to implement.

Due to this going to take additional time we agreed as an interim measure to make our current form digital.

Children's Learning Disability Team

The Hull & East Riding Children’s Learning Disability Team is a specialist team of Learning Disability nurses with input from Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry.

We provide specialist assessment and interventions for children/young people in the following areas: -

Understanding and managing behaviours that challenge

Sexual Safety

Emotional Regulation

Sleep – in conjunction with KIDS

Alongside this the team offers: -

advice and consultation to children, families, carers and other professionals involved.

training for staff, carers, and families to support their understanding.

promotion of collaborative working between health professionals and other agencies, including voluntary organisations

What is a learning disability?

There are three core criteria for learning disability:

1. Significant impairment of intellectual functioning

This means difficulties understanding, learning and remembering new things and in generalising any learning to new situations. This generally refers to an IQ of 69 or less.

2. Significant impairment of adaptive or social functioning

This means difficulties with a number of social tasks, for example communication, self-care, awareness and health and safety. This means a young person may struggle to cope on a day-to-day basis with the demands of their environment.

3. Age of onset is before adulthood

The children's community team, learning disability is committed to working with the area child protection committee guidelines and the principles of the Children Act 1989.

How to access the service

We welcome referrals from professionals who have knowledge of the child / young person across Health, Social Care, Education and Voluntary Sector settings.

Confidentiality

Information will not be shared with other people or agencies without consent. However, there are exceptions to this, which will be explained fully at first meeting with families.

Additional support required?

Should you find it difficult to complete these forms there are services that can help, please contact us for details.

Our stakeholders and partner providers may be able to provide support with specific needs such as sleep support, sensory processing, and integration, understanding autism and ADHD and emotional dysregulation.

Professionals working with young people who they believe to be neurodivergent can make a request for a 30-minute consultation with an Advanced Practitioner to discuss the appropriateness of the referral and identify any area or need. These need to be requested on an appointment basis only.

Matthews Hub is a local charity whose ethos is to provide a support service for autistic people without a learning disability aged 13 or over, living in Hull or East Riding who have, or are waiting for a diagnostic assessment.

The Parent Carer Forums are local voluntary organisations run by parents and carers of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND). CISS

Are you a Parent Carer?

Do you provide support to a child who is ill, disabled or has a mental health problem.

As a parent carer your role may be causing you additional practical, emotional or financial worries that you need support with.

The Carers Information & Support Service (CISS) are available for support if you are aged 18 years or over and support a loved one, family member or friend who could not otherwise manage without help and who lives within the Hull Local Authority city boundary or has a GP in Hull.

CISS offer a comprehensive Carer Assessment resulting in information on your entitlements and identifying community services available to you and person/s you care for.

CISS work in partnership with the Special Stars Foundation and on the First Wednesday of the month host a coffee morning for parent carers to enable them to come and have a chat and share advice and experiences with other parent carers.

Contact Point

If you believe the young person, you know is mentally unwell and seeking specific support for anxiety; low mood, and or possible other mental ill health concerns a referral can be made on-line by an involved professional, parents/carers can call the service to make a referral and self-referrals can be made by young people aged 16-18 years by calling Contact Point on 01482 303688, Monday to Friday: 9am-5pm (excluding bank holidays).

CAMHS Crisis Team

Should your young person be in crisis linked to mental health distress, our CAMHS Crisis Team (Child Adolescent Mental Health Service) supports young people residing in Hull or the East Riding and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 01482 259400.
