Complex Emotional Needs Service (CENS)
CENS is a psychology-led, multidisciplinary team who collaborates with clients and colleagues to provide comprehensive support to individuals facing challenges consistent with emotion dysregulation and other long-standing difficulties, for example in their relationships to others, or high levels or risk-related behaviours that may put themselves at risk of serious harm. Sometimes, people who we support may have been given a diagnosis of ‘Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder’ or ‘Borderline Personality Disorder’, however this is not required for our service, and we support people with a range of experiences including trauma, autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
CENS comprises Clinical Psychologists, Advanced Practitioners, Assistant Psychology, Support Time & Recovery Worker, and DBT Therapists. Our work revolves around supporting systems and services to use person-centred and formulation-driven approaches with the individuals they support; this usually involves asking the question ‘what happened to this person and how can we understand the difficulties they are continuing to experience?’ rather than asking the question ‘what is wrong with this person?’ or ‘what is this person’s diagnosis?’.
We aim to support people to access mainstream services and we offer:
- Consultation: Qualified clinicians within our team provide consultation to other services to support them in working with people they are supporting.
- Supervision: We offer supervision sessions to support other professionals in their practice.
- Key-working: We take on the keyworker, or ‘care co-ordinator' role, for some people whose needs cannot be met by mainstream mental health services. This is accessed following a 12-week assessment, which can be requested through our consultation process.
- Training: We provide tailored training for supported living providers to enhance understanding of the formulated needs of care-coordinated individuals within CENS.
- Humber Personality Disorder Training (Knowledge and Understanding Framework (KUF)): We offer training on complex mental health needs associated with ‘Personality Disorder’ for both internal staff and external agencies.
- Humber Family Connections: a dedicated 12-week course for unpaid carers/supporters of individuals who experience emotion dysregulation.
Professionals from Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust and other partner agencies can request consultation or supervision by completing the following form: https://forms.office.com/e/XMgGLpe6iG
There is no direct referral route for key-working- all referrals begin with consultation, accessed via the above link.
Service-users are unable to directly access these elements of the service and should liaise with their existing care team, who can then request a referral to CENS.
