Wish Granted: Karaoke machine donated to the Humber Centre

Health Stars is our Trust’s charity and works to deliver a variety of ‘wishes’ across all Trust services. A ‘wish’ is for something that would enhance one of our services and provide a real difference to our patients and staff.

Working with services throughout the Trust, Health Stars bring in funds raised through organised events and donations made by businesses or individuals who support our Trust.

One such donor is Happy Hounds, an independent dog boarding business owned and operated by Phil Bown and Richard Thomas. Phil from Happy Hounds had previously pledged his support to Health Stars and so when a wish for a karaoke machine came in from the Humber Centre he was contacted.  

Staff said “The Humber Centre deals with admission on an acute level if someone is unwell, with the main aim being to help people back into the community. Our fantastic staff at the Humber Centre ensure the inpatients there have the best means of re-entering the community.”

The Humber Centre put in a wish for a new karaoke machine for patients to use, as their previous model had a limited number of songs available. Patients and staff currently make time for karaoke on a Friday afternoon and now with the new machine they have many more songs to enjoy.

I attended the handover of the karaoke machine with Christine Eyre, Charity Co-Ordinator at Health Stars, Phil Bown, Co-Owner of Happy Hounds and several Humber Centre staff. It was a pleasant event and we hope we can fulfil many more wishes going forward.

Christine Eyre is the Charity Co-Ordinator at Health Stars, she said, “I am delighted we could make this wish happen, for a couple of hundred pounds, this will make a massive difference to all of the patients here.”

Phil said, “I am a firm believer in supporting your local community. We started raising money for a couple charities last year like Jerry Green dog rescue and Wood Green dog rescue and we wanted to continue to help elsewhere.”

Staff said “We have the patient karaoke sessions on a Friday afternoon, it’s a really good activity that for groups to sing and even people who usually don’t want to sing end up partaking as part of a group.”

Staff continued by saying, “We are so happy with this new system, as it has a scoring system. Spice Girls is the usual artist we have playing, and the patients like playing Bohemian Rhapsody too!”
