Name announced for new CAMHS inpatient unit in hull

The region’s new children’s and adolescent mental health inpatient unit has been named ‘Inspire’ following a competition run by Humber Teaching NHS Trust’s charity, Health Stars.

The unit, based on Walker Street, Hull includes nine general adolescent beds and four beds Psychiatric Intensive Care beds and will provide mental health in-patient services for the young people of Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire.

The competition invited schools, young people, and the public to provide suggestions via social media for the name of the building. The chosen name of ‘Inspire’ was suggested on Twitter by Nicola Hields from East Riding and following a selection process led by a panel of young people and clinicians, was named the winning entry.

The prize for the winning entrant was to nominate a local school of their choice to receive £500 to support a project for students. Nicola Hields chose The Hub School, Springhead Lane, Hull who has requested the prize money go towards improving the gym equipment for their students.

Nicola said: “I took part in the competition because the unit is such an important and fantastic new service for young people in the area. I was delighted to be chosen by young people as the winner and it will be fantastic to see the name go up on the building. The name is about giving young people the confidence and desire towards their own recovery. I chose the Hub School because it offers specialist services for students with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties and this seemed a good fit with the new unit.”

Throughout the appeal we have focussed on not only raising funds to provide enhancements to the unit but also on highlighting the issues of mental health in young people. We hope that through engaging the public in naming this fantastic new unit, we have continued to deliver on our commitment to help reduce the stigma around mental health.”

The region’s young people have been at the heart of building ‘Inspire’ so it was fitting that the name was also chosen by them. A name is much more that a sign on a building and through this process we have ensured that has a wider meaning and a connection to the young people and communities it will serve.
