It’s time to talk to our services this Suicide Prevention Day

Published: 07 September 2022

World Suicide Prevention Day is on 10th September 2022, and this year’s theme is ‘creating hope through action’. This is a reminder to us all that there is an alternative to suicide, and that we are able to inspire confidence and light in everybody.

Our services would like to mark this day by reminding you that ‘It’s OK to Talk’, and that support is available to those who need it in Hull and the East Riding.

Suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 29 and for every suicide that results in death, there are as many as 40 attempted suicides. What we know for sure is that there’s a lot to live for, that suicide is a permanent solution for a temporary problem, and that, by coming together, we can work to reduce this number year on year.

Suicide Prevention Day aims encourage us to work together with our families, friends, healthcare workers, religious and political leaders to prevent suicide through active counselling and support. It’s time we empowered people to live their lives and value the one life they have.

Phil Anastasi, Project Officer in our Your Health Service, said:

“It’s important to talk about loss and be able to support individuals in their darkest moments. We want to reduce suicide rates in our region through early interventions. We can all play a role in supporting those experiencing a suicidal crisis or those bereaved by suicide whether as a member of society, as a child, as a parent, as a friend, as a colleague or as a person with lived experience.

We can all encourage understanding about the issue, reach into people who are struggling, and share our experiences. We can all create hope through action and be the light. Our team are on hand for the support, guidance and motivation you may need now and to begin to move forwards.”

If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide, we are here for you.

After a UFC fight in July 2022, Patrick Pimblett dedicated his victory to his friend, Ricky, who had committed suicide a few days before the fight. He said: “Speak to anyone. I know I would rather have my mate cry on my shoulder than go to his funeral next week. So please, let’s get rid of this stigma.”

It's time to fight the stigma together. Let’s talk about suicide, raising awareness and helping to prevent suicide in Hull and the East Riding.
