Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust secures funding to help tackle climate change

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to announce that they have received £1.74million in funding from the Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) as part of Phase 2 of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS).

BEIS say on their website that the PSDS funding is to “to tackle climate change, support economic recovery and work towards the UK's net-zero target.”

The grant will specifically go towards improvements at the Trust’s Humber Centre and East Riding Community Hospital. The aim is to the heating systems at these locations, which includes Solar PV, air source heat pumps, lighting upgrade, wind power and improvements to BMS controls

Client Support Officer at Salix Finance, Ben Hebbert said: “Salix administers Government funding to the public sector to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and ensure lower energy bills.”

Salix is a non-departmental public body, owned wholly by Government. The company is currently delivering Phases 1 and 2 of the PSDS scheme that the Trust themselves have now become beneficiaries of.

In addition, Alex Fowler, Environmental Manager at Humber Teaching NHS Foundation trust, stated that the project’s aimed completion date is spring 2022. At which time, while the new systems are live, the gas systems will also remain in place for a period of one year, to monitor the new installations of low carbon heating alternatives.

Other improvements to take place across both sites will be to replace the current heating systems with air source heat pumps, LED lighting fitted throughout the internal space and solar panels fitted externally.

Alex said: “Overall, there will be a significant improvement to the building management systems, as equipment will be able to be controlled remotely, lending the Trust further control of heating within these two sites.”

“This is a fantastic achievement for the Trust. Our teams are grateful for the support from BEIS and Salix and look forward to working with them moving forwards.”

Another benefit of these projects is that they will make the heating systems at two of the largest using sites carbon neutral and doing this will form the blueprint for all Humber sites going forward, starting with the East Riding. This is the largest installation of green technology to this point for our Trust and will be the start of the future for green development within the organisation.
