Hoarding Awareness Week 2021: Useful resources about hoarding

Published: 01 January 0001

We hope you have enjoyed reading our content about hoarding this Hoarding Awareness Week. As we are closing the week, we wanted to share with you some useful resources and sources of support, to guide you moving forwards.

When working with people who hoard, you may need to seek support from your colleagues or in supervision. You can also seek support from the Trust Safeguarding Team, or the relevant Local Authority Safeguarding Team.

You can find details below:

  • Hull City Council:

If you are concerned about a person who is self-neglecting or hoarding, who has capacity and is at serious risk of harm then you may refer to Hull Safeguarding Adults Board for a VARM (Vulnerable Adult Risk Management meeting). Click here for further details and the referral link: Vulnerable adults risk management panel | Hull City Council

If you have a safeguarding concern you should contact the team on 01482 616092 to discuss the concern before submitting.

  • East Riding of Yorkshire Council:

If you are concerned about a person who is self-neglecting or hoarding, who has capacity and is at serious risk of harm then this may meet the criteria for a VARM. You must send a concern form to the East Riding Safeguarding Adults Team which can be done via this link: http://www.ersab.org.uk/#report. The team can be contacted on 01482 396940.

The East Riding VARM and self-neglect policy, and VARM documents can be found here: Policy and guidance (ersab.org.uk)

  • North Yorkshire Council:

If you are concerned about an adult who is self-neglecting or hoarding you can contact the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Adults Team for advice on 01609 780780 (this is a customer services number that will put your request through).

All referrals must be made using a concern form which can be downloaded from here:

NYSAB (safeguardingadults.co.uk)

This includes referrals to discuss people who hoard who may need a MASM (multi-agency self-neglect meeting).

Humberside Fire & Rescue Service has joined with other statutory bodies to create the ‘Hoarding Protocol’. This document includes a Clutter Index Rating tool which allows you to rate the level of hoarding in a house from 1-9, and then gives advice and recommendations for how to respond to the hoarding in accordance with the rating given. See here.

More information can be found on the Safeguarding Team intranet page. We would encourage you to take some time to look at this page as it is regularly updated with resources as well as all the contact details and forms you will need to make referrals to the Local Authority.
