Glittering awards night celebrates teaching excellence at Hull York Medical School

On behalf of the Medical Education Team, Dr Soraya Mayet, Director of Medical Education, and Gillian Hughes, Medical Directorate and Medical Education Manager would like to extend a well-deserved congratulations to latest Teaching Excellence Award winners.

On Tuesday 24 May, over 140 guests came together to celebrate the exceptional medical education and support provided to Hull York Medical School’s Medicine and Physician Associate students, at the school’s annual Teaching Excellence Awards. 

The glittering event, hosted in person for the first time since 2019, saw prizes awarded in seven categories, and was attended by primary and secondary care tutors and senior representatives from the School’s NHS Trust and University partners, as well as Clinical Skills and Problem Based Learning (PBL) Tutors, support colleagues, student liaison teams and students. 

The student-led Teaching Excellence Awards provide an opportunity for students on the undergraduate Medicine and postgraduate Physician Associate Studies programmes to recognise those tutors and colleagues who have gone the extra mile to support them in their studies, on clinical placement or in PBL sessions, as well as in a pastoral or extra-curricular capacity. 

Nomination criteria

Nominations were submitted by Medicine and Physician Associate students for their tutors and support staff who demonstrate HYMS values including:

• Promoting a culture of diversity, respect and aspiration, making students feel valued, supported, and empowered to reach their potential
• Working in partnership with students and colleagues, recognising the strengths of others
• Delivering exceptional medical education, and encouraging students to think critically and creatively, and motivating them to learn more
• Setting an example to students by being dedicated to public service and improving lives within our communities

Our winners

Dr Carolien Lino won the Phase II & III Tutor of Excellence Award, with the organisation stating that she is "an outstanding GP tutor, sharing the very best of general practice with us and showing how rewarding the career can be.”

Further feedback included:

• "Encourages students to work independently while offering great support"  
• "Inspires students through an obvious dedication to patients and their well-being"  

Jane Lloyd, Undergraduate Programme Officer, won the Administrative Support Award, with members stating that Jane is:

• "Extremely organised and communicative"  
• "Helpful and available"  
• "Greatly appreciated for the many, many small ways in which she supports students"  

In addition to this, Dr Gabriel Michael and Dr Carolien Lino were commended for their exceptional contribution to student experience and were nominees for the corresponding award.

This award recognises tutors and administrative staff who go above and beyond the call of duty to enhance the student experience. Nominations are submitted by both Medicine and Physician Associate students.

Well done to our teams

Overall, we are extremely proud of our teams and are pleased to see that these achievements compliment the feedback received directly from HYMS during a recent ‘Quality Assurance of Clinical Placements - Annual Review Meeting’.

Following an open and in-depth meeting, the Medical School agreed that the Trust is ‘Providing high-quality placements for medical students’.

The Medical School thanked the leadership team and teaching staff at the Trust for their excellent contribution ‘the fact that the Trust has received high number of nominations of teaching excellence awards by students is a testament of contribution’.
