Get support to quit smoking in the East Riding this World No Tobacco Day

Published: 01 January 0001

World No Tobacco Day is hosted every year by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on 31st May. The day was created to raise awareness about the dangers and health risks of smoking tobacco, and ultimately, to stop use of tobacco around the world.

This year’s campaign is also focused on raising public awareness of the environmental impact of tobacco. From cultivation, production and distribution to the toxic waste smoking generates.

Many populations across the world are aware of the dangers of tobacco, including it being the leading cause of throat and lung cancers. What is little known about smoking tobacco, however, is that it is also one of the main causes of heart problems and diseases.

Tobacco use and second-hand smoke are known to contribute to around 12% of all deaths from heart disease and is the second leading cause of cardiovascular disease, second only to high blood pressure (which smoking can also contribute to).

While these numbers are not favourable for smokers, it’s important to remember that nearly 900,000 people are killed by breathing in second-hand smoke.

Local health organisations work hard to ensure their communities are aware of these risks and offer effective methods of support to quit. It is increasingly important that these organisations continue to highlight the issue that smokers don’t just affect their own health, but that of their loved ones and other people around them.

One of the aims our Your Health service hopes to achieve this World No Tobacco Day is to highlight these risks, but also to present solutions for local people.

The Your Health Smoking Cessation team are on hand to support you to quit today.

Natalie Belt, Service Manager at Your Health, Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“Any date that focuses on improving health is always a good idea in my book. No Tobacco Day is increasingly important as we continue to research and explore the many ways in which smoking is harmful to your health and wellbeing.

Tobacco use not only increases your health risks, but it also has a significant negative impact on the environment, which is one more reason to break the habit.

Our teams are here to support you on your journey to stop smoking, improve your health and finances, and to encourage a smokefree generation for children and young people growing up locally.”
