European Antibiotic Awareness Day
Published: 18 November 2019
Today 18 November 2019 is European Antibiotic Awareness Day. This is an annual European public health initiative that takes place to raise awareness about the threat to public health of antibiotic resistance. The latest data confirms that across the European Union, the number of patients infected by resistant bacteria is increasing and that antibiotic resistance is a major threat to public health.
Prudent use of antibiotics can help prevent bacteria developing resistance and help keep antibiotics effective for the use of future generations.
Members of the public are encouraged to visit the European Antibiotic Awareness website and read the information to raise their understanding and awareness of the initiative that the Trust promotes each year. Reading this information can help viewers, friends and relatives understand the global threat we are all facing and help by taking their own actions in regards to antibiotic use and taking their doctors advice.
Today also marks the first day of World Antibiotic Awareness Week – more information on this to follow throughout the week, so be sure to check back soon.
