East Riding celebrates record low levels of smoking in adults
Published: 04 January 2023
Our YOUR Health Stop Smoking Service are pleased to share record low smoking prevalence rates for adults in the East Riding.
The Tobacco Control profiles were published recently illustrate the downward trend and emphasise the positive impact that local smoking cessation teams and community support makes. The data published also shows that Smoking at Time of Delivery (SATOD) rates in pregnant women are also at a record low locally.
In the Yorkshire and Humber region, the East Riding of Yorkshire had the second lowest rate of smoking prevalence in adults (18+ years) out of 15 counties, amounting to 10.2%. This is down from 10.8% (Regional – 14.1%, England – 13%) previously.
SATOD rates in the region are also showing continued reduction rates. To continue in this positive direction, the YOUR Health Stop Smoking team have designated clinics within maternity settings to work with health professionals who support pregnant smokers and their families to quit for good.
The latest figures show East Riding SATOD rates are 10.9%, a reduction from 12.3% (Regional – 12%, England – 9.1%) previously. What is even more encouraging is that, out of the 15 regions, all but one area had reduced or the same levels of SATOD, meaning that smoking in pregnancy is not on the rise across the region as a whole.
This news is certainly something to be celebrated, as it means fewer people than ever continue to smoke in the East Riding and fewer babies are being born with significant risk of SIDS and other concerns, as a result of parents who smoke. This fantastic result is a testament to the high-quality service provided by our teams since 2015, at which time smoking prevalence amongst adults in the region was as high as 15.7%.
Jon, Service Manager in our YOUR Health team, said:
“Smoking remains the biggest cause of preventable illness and death, so the progress shown in the latest data is especially great news for our teams, as it demonstrates the positive impact their work continues to have on individuals and families across our patch.”
Our Trust’s stop smoking teams are here to support you on your journey to stop smoking, improve your health and finances, and to encourage a smokefree generation for children and young people growing up locally.
We are also proud to offer stop smoking services for NHS staff, which are currently on offer in multiple venues locally, including in Cottingham, Goole and Bridlington.
