Black Breastfeeding Week 2022
Published: 01 January 0001
Black Breastfeeding Week is held annually from 25 – 31st August, during the last week of Breastfeeding Awareness Month.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of Black Breastfeeding Week, and the event organisers want to show that they’re just getting started.
#BBW22 is a chance to celebrate the countless stories and families – past, present and future. It is also an opportunity to raise voices and establish the new foundation of lactation support, which must be built upon racial equity, cultural empowerment and community engagement.
We believe in the power of our collective resilience.
What we are doing to show our support
Our Infant Feeding Leads in Hull and the East Riding attend a national infant feeding network meeting and the cultural competency sub-group that focuses particularly on racial inequality and how we can improve breastfeeding accessibility and support for all.
Staff members from our 0-19 service and local Children’s Centres have recently completed training to promote cultural safety and intelligence, and how to ensure the breastfeeding support they provide is inclusive.
In addition, our teams have built a framework to help guide them when questioning our practice and developing ideas for development. This includes understanding the impact of inequalities, addressing the barriers people face and how we can help resolve them, a zero tolerance policy, and celebrating diversity in all of our services.
