An introduction to Marilyn Foster, Our Governor for Service Users and Carers

Read our eighth Governor profile as part of our monthly Humber Happenings Newsletter, this month, we take a look at Marilyn Foster, one of our Governors for service users and carers, and how she has used her experience within the NHS to advocate for patents and caregivers.

Can you tell us a bit about your background please and how this led to you becoming a Governor?

Since retiring in 2006 from my role as a counsellor in Primary Care within the NHS, my primary focus has been on advocating for patients and caregivers. I've been actively involved as a governor since the summer of 2022, bringing my experience and passion for healthcare to the table.

What appointments and experiences have you had that you felt was necessary to bring to this role?

In addition to my governorship, I served as the Chair of Relate Bradford until approximately two years ago and actively participated in various charitable endeavours within the city. I relocated from Bradford to Market Weighton, where I am currently a member of the Market Weighton Patient Participation group. My commitment to healthcare extends to involvement in NHS research as a patient/public representative, contributing to the improvement of healthcare services.

I hold the position of Lay Fellow at the Improvement Academy and am a dedicated member of a Patient/Carer forum at Humber, where I continue to champion the patient's perspective in healthcare decisions.

What are your hobbies and personal interests?

Beyond my healthcare interests, I find joy in a diverse range of activities. I am an enthusiastic member of my local choir, and my interests also extend to reading and gardening. I am also a member of U3A, and I am actively engaged with my local Rotary group.

My husband and I share a passion for travel and frequently explore new destinations. We also take delight in hosting and entertaining friends.
